What is Vimshottari Dasha?
Vimshottari is a 120-year cycle of planetary periods used in classical Jyotiṣa. The Moon's birth Nakshatra sets the starting lord; then periods follow a fixed order (Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury) with durations that sum to 120 years.
Mahadasha, Antardasha, Pratyantardasha
- Mahadasha — the major period of one planet, often spanning several years.
- Antardasha — nine sub-periods inside each Mahadasha, apportioned by time.
- Pratyantardasha — finer subdivisions inside an Antardasha, used for shorter-range timing.
Why exact birth time matters
Dasha balance at birth depends on how far the Moon has progressed within its Nakshatra. Small clock errors can shift sub-period boundaries, so use the most accurate birth time you have.
