What is Lagna (Ascendant)?
Lagna is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the exact time and geographic location of your birth. In the D1 (Rashi) chart it marks the first house—the lens through which planetary influences are counted and the starting point of the whole horoscope.
Because the ascendant depends on Earth's rotation, birth time and birthplace are essential. A difference of even a few minutes can change the rising sign when you are born near a sign boundary.
