Shadbala (Sanskrit: षड्बल, “six-fold strength”) is Vedic astrology's most rigorous scoring system for measuring planetary power. It combines six independent strength types — positional, directional, temporal, motional, natural, and aspect strength — into a single composite score per planet. Enter your exact birth date, time, and place to instantly see how strong each planet is in your D1 chart.

What is Shadbala?
Shadbala (Sanskrit: षड्बल, “six-fold strength”) is Vedic astrology's most comprehensive and mathematically rigorous system for measuring the power of each of the seven classical planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn. The word “shad” means six, and “bala” means strength. The six component strengths are added together to produce a composite score in Virupas (also called Shashtiamshas), and then divided by 60 to express the result in Rupas.
Shadbala was formalised in the ancient text Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra and has been the standard planetary-strength benchmark in Vedic astrology for over two thousand years. Modern Vedic software universally implements it; this calculator computes it from your sidereal D1 chart using the Lahiri ayanamsha.
The Six Components of Shadbala
| Bala (Strength) | What It Measures | Max Virupas |
|---|---|---|
| Sthana Bala | Positional strength: exaltation, own sign, Moolatrikona, and friendly/enemy placement | ~300 |
| Kaala Bala | Temporal strength: day/night birth, lunar fortnight, Hora, weekday, month, and year | ~600 |
| Dig Bala | Directional strength: each planet thrives in one of the four chart quadrants | 60 |
| Cheshta Bala | Motional strength: based on orbital speed; retrograde planets score maximum (60) | 60 |
| Naisargika Bala | Natural/inherent strength: a fixed permanent score unique to each planet | 60 |
| Drik Bala | Aspect strength: net benefic or malefic aspects received from other planets | ±60 |
1. Sthana Bala — Positional Strength
Sthana Bala is the largest single component of Shadbala. It combines five sub-strengths: Uccha Bala (exaltation proximity), Saptavargaja Bala (seven-divisional chart placement), Ojhayugma Bala (odd/even sign preference), Kendra Bala (angular house strength), and Drekkana Bala (decanate strength). A planet in its exaltation sign in an angular house will have very high Sthana Bala.
2. Kaala Bala — Temporal Strength
Kaala Bala measures how well-timed a planet is relative to the moment of birth. It includes Nathonnatha Bala (day/night), Paksha Bala (lunar fortnight — benefics gain at Full Moon), Thribhaga Bala (third of the day/night), Abda Bala (year lord), Masa Bala (month lord), Vara Bala (weekday lord), and Hora Bala (hour lord). This component can swing significantly for the same person born a few hours earlier or later.
3. Dig Bala — Directional Strength
Each planet has a “preferred direction” in the chart — the angular house where it gains maximum directional strength (60 Virupas), decreasing smoothly to 0 in the opposite house. Sun and Mars peak in the 10th; Moon and Venus in the 4th; Saturn in the 7th; Mercury and Jupiter in the 1st.
4. Cheshta Bala — Motional Strength
Cheshta Bala reflects a planet's orbital behavior at the time of birth. A retrograde planet scores the maximum 60 Virupas; a stationary (about to turn retrograde or direct) planet scores 30; a planet moving at its mean speed scores around 15. Faster-than-average or slower-than-average movement produces intermediate values. The Sun and Moon use alternative calculations (Ayana Bala and Paksha Bala respectively) since they never retrograde.
5. Naisargika Bala — Natural Strength
This is a permanent, unchanging score reflecting each planet's inherent brightness and cosmic authority: Sun 60, Moon 51.4, Venus 42.9, Jupiter 34.3, Mercury 25.7, Mars 17.1, Saturn 8.6. Every person born at any time has these exact values — it is the baseline before all other factors.
6. Drik Bala — Aspect Strength
Drik Bala is the net result of all planetary aspects a planet receives. Aspects from benefics (Jupiter, Venus, Mercury, waxing Moon) add positive Virupas; aspects from malefics (Saturn, Mars, Sun, Rahu, Ketu) subtract them. A planet with strong Drik Bala has the support of benefic planets watching over it; a negative Drik Bala indicates the planet is under malefic pressure.
Minimum Shadbala Requirements
Classical texts prescribe a minimum score each planet must meet for its significations to function reliably in a chart. Meeting or exceeding the minimum means the planet can deliver its promised results in life areas it governs.
| Planet | Minimum Shadbala Required |
|---|---|
| Sun | 390 Virupas / 6.5 Rupas |
| Moon | 360 Virupas / 6.0 Rupas |
| Mercury | 420 Virupas / 7.0 Rupas |
| Jupiter | 390 Virupas / 6.5 Rupas |
| Venus | 330 Virupas / 5.5 Rupas |
| Mars | 300 Virupas / 5.0 Rupas |
| Saturn | 300 Virupas / 5.0 Rupas |
| Rahu/Ketu | No classical standard |
How to Read Your Shadbala Results
Look at Rupas first
The Rupas value (Virupas ÷ 60) is the most interpretable number. Any planet scoring ≥ its minimum Rupa requirement is considered “shadbala-strong” and will tend to manifest its significations well during its Mahadasha or when transiting key natal points.
Compare components
Look at which Bala component drives a planet's high (or low) score. A planet strong only in Kaala Bala is a “timing gift” — it was dignified at the moment of birth but may be positionally weak. A planet strong in Sthana and Dig Bala is a pillar of the chart.
Drik Bala negatives
Negative Drik Bala values are normal for some planets in many charts and indicate that malefic aspects outweigh benefic ones. They reduce the overall Shadbala total but do not automatically make a planet “bad” — context from the full chart (sign, house, dispositor) always matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a high Shadbala planet always give good results?
Not automatically. A strong malefic (like Saturn or Mars) will deliver its significations powerfully — which can be both challenging and rewarding. Shadbala measures strength, not beneficence. A strong Saturn in a favorable house may give disciplined career success; the same strong Saturn in the 7th could bring a demanding or delayed marriage.
Why does exact birth time matter so much?
Kaala Bala accounts for roughly 20–40 % of a typical planet's total Shadbala. It changes every hour as the Hora lord changes, and significantly shifts at sunrise/sunset when the Nathonnatha split flips. A 30-minute error can meaningfully alter several planets' Kaala Bala values, potentially pushing them above or below their minimums.
What is the difference between Shadbala and Ashtakvarga?
Shadbala measures individual planetary strength — how powerful a single planet is in your natal chart. Ashtakvarga measures house-level benefic energy — how many favorable points a specific sign/house receives from all planets combined. Shadbala tells you which planets are strong; Ashtakvarga tells you which life areas (houses) are well-supported. Both systems are used together for deep chart analysis.
