Understanding Your Vedic Moon Sign (Chandra Rashi)
In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), your Moon sign, Chandra Rashi, is the sidereal zodiac sign the Moon occupied at your exact birth moment. The Moon governs the mind (Manas), emotions, memory, habits, and your relationship with nourishment and the mother figure.
Unlike Western tropical astrology, Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac aligned to the constellations. Your Vedic Moon sign can differ from a tropical Moon sign, and it changes roughly every two and a half days, so birth time and place are essential for an accurate calculation.
Tropical vs. sidereal: why your Moon sign may differ
Western charts often use the tropical zodiac anchored to the seasons. Vedic charts use sidereal longitudes with an Ayanamsha correction (this app uses Lahiri, common in India and among Jyotish practitioners). That offset means your Vedic Moon sign is not always the same as a tropical Moon sign from a Western app.

Why birth time and birthplace are required
Simple "Moon sign from date only" calculators ignore the Moon's real motion and can be wrong on the day the Moon changes signs. For sidereal Moon sign, house, and nakshatra you need:
- Accurate local birth time (or a reasonable default if unknown).
- Birth coordinates or a resolved place, for correct ascendant-dependent houses.

What is my rashi by date of birth?

What if I don't know my exact birth time?
Use the "Not sure of time of birth" option and a default time is applied. Your rashi may still be correct if the Moon was not near a boundary that day, but the house will be less reliable.
