What the planet rules for your Lagna
A planet's role changes with your rising sign. For Taurus rising, Saturn rules the 9th and 10th houses and acts as a yogakaraka, so its period can be one of the best in the chart. For Aries rising, the same Saturn rules the 10th and 11th but sits differently in the scheme, and its period behaves quite differently. Reputation matters far less than rulership.
The planet's strength
An exalted or own-sign dasha lord delivers its themes generously. A debilitated or combust one delivers the same themes with friction and delay. Strength doesn't change what a period is about; it changes how much resistance you meet while it happens.
Where the planet sits
The house holding the dasha lord is where the period's energy shows up. A 10th-house placement brings work to the front. A 12th-house placement brings expenses, travel or withdrawal. This is often the part people recognise most quickly when a period is described to them.
The antardasha inside it
A mahadasha lasting sixteen or nineteen years is never uniform. The antardashas inside it can be dramatically different, and a difficult mahadasha frequently contains excellent sub-periods. When people say a period "turned around", an antardasha change is usually what happened.

This period has been hard so far
Two things are worth checking. First, whether an antardasha within it has been doing the damage, in which case the relief comes sooner than the mahadasha's end. Second, whether a transit is compounding it. Both narrow a vague sense of heaviness into something with an end date.
I have years left of this period

There's no universal answer, because it depends on what the dasha lord rules for your Lagna, how strong it is and where it sits in your chart. What is the difference between mahadasha and antardasha?
The mahadasha is the main period, lasting six to twenty years depending on the planet. The antardasha is a sub-period inside it, running from a few months to nearly three years. The mahadasha sets the theme of the decade and the antardasha sets what's happening this year.
Which mahadasha is the best one to run?
It varies by chart. For many Lagnas, the period of a yogakaraka, the planet ruling both a kendra and a trikona, is among the most productive. Periods of strong, well-placed planets ruling the 1st, 5th, 9th, 10th or 11th houses also tend to be constructive. There's no single best planet for everyone.
Can a bad dasha be fixed?
A period runs its course. What can change is how you use it: a demanding stretch is usually better spent building skills, clearing obligations and consolidating than pushing for expansion. Knowing what a period asks for is more practical than trying to counteract it.
Why does my period feel nothing like the general descriptions?
General descriptions treat a planet as if it means the same thing in every chart. Yours rules particular houses, sits in a particular place and has a particular strength. Once those three are accounted for, most people recognise their period quite quickly.
