Ask Vedanta · Karma and the fruit
कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन, the verse everyone quotes, and what it actually asks of you.
You did the work properly and the result still did not come. The line people send you afterwards sounds cold. Guidance, not prediction, with a Sanskrit shloka for your situation. Free, no birth details.

The disappointment is real. The self blame is filed wrong.
Karm karo fal ki chinta mat karo is the sentence people hand you when the result refuses to match the effort. You hear it as "do not feel this." That is why it stings. You stayed late, you kept the standard, you did not cut the corner, and the outcome still went somewhere else. A promotion stalled. A paper came back. A launch landed flat. The hurt is not imaginary, and a proverb that seems to ban the hurt feels like an insult added to the miss.
Phala asakti, clinging to the fruit, is not the same as having wanted the fruit. Wanting a result is how a person aims. Clinging is the later move: you treat the fruit as wages you were owed for being careful, and when the wages do not arrive you prosecute yourself as if the missing fruit were evidence of a bad action. The text draws a jurisdiction line. Your claim is on the doing. It is not on the fruit. The disappointment stays in the world. The self blame that says "so what was the point of doing it right" has walked into an office that was never yours.
Watch the two sentences you are running together. "It did not work" is a report. "I should not have bothered" is a filing error. The second sentence tries to protect you from caring again by smearing the work you actually did. Gita says about karma, in the ordinary posters, often stops at the Hindi slogan and leaves you with the smear. The verse underneath the slogan is stricter and kinder than that. It refuses both the fantasy that right action purchases an outcome, and the sulk that says if the outcome is not purchased then the action was a fool.

Phala asakti
Clinging to the fruit, so a missed result is put on trial as if it were a bad action.
Phala asakti shows up after the result, not before it. You replay the weeks of care and then cross them out because the scoreboard did not move. You tell the story as waste: the extra draft, the honest email, the night you did not ship something sloppy. Friends hear a complaint about luck. Under it is a legal claim, that careful work was supposed to compel the fruit. When the claim fails, you do not update the claim. You indict the worker. The body goes heavy. The next task gets a sarcastic half effort, which the verse also refuses, because sliding into non action is the other side of the same cling.
I did everything right, so the miss means the doing was pointless.

The verse for this
karmaṇyevādhikāras te mā phaleṣu kadācana| mā karmaphalahetur bhūr mā te saṅgo 'stvakarmaṇi||2.47||
You have a claim on the action alone, never on its fruit. Do not act for the sake of the fruit, and do not cling to doing nothing.
This is the line the whole slogan is trying to remember, and the slogan usually drops the second half. Bhagavad gita chapter 2 verse 47 does not say the fruit is unreal. It says the fruit is outside your jurisdiction. Adhikara, the claim, sits on the work. Ma phaleshu kadachana: not on the fruits, not at any time. Then Krishna blocks two escapes. Do not make the fruit the motive that owns the action. And do not, in the disappointment, fall in love with akarma, with not doing. Heard as consolation, the verse is cold because it will not pay you in outcomes. Heard as a division of labour, it is exact. You were responsible for the care. You were not the clerk of the result. The self blame that rewrites careful work as naivety has misfiled a real disappointment into a moral charge. The next honest step is to name the fruit you are still cross examining, put it back outside your desk, and do the next piece of work without either the fantasy of payment or the sulk of refusal. You were never in charge of the part that disappointed you.

What an answer looks like
An example, not a real conversation.
“I prepared properly for the interview, I did not bluff, and they still picked someone else. I feel stupid for having cared. What was the point?”
The point of the preparation was the preparation. That sounds like a poster until you separate the two files. File one: you told the truth about your work and you were ready. That file is closed, and it is clean. File two: they picked someone else. That file is a result. It is allowed to hurt. It is not evidence that file one was foolish.
Phala asakti is the urge to merge the files so the pain has a defendant. If the fruit is missing, the worker must be guilty. Bhagavad gita chapter 2 verse 47 meaning, in the room you are actually in, is that this merger is the mistake. The verse does not ask you to feel pleased. It asks you not to prosecute the care.
Do not answer the miss by going vague on the next application, or by deciding that honesty was the error. That slide into not doing is the last clause of the verse, and it is the one the slogan forgets. A thinner effort next time would be clinging, not learning.
The next honest step is narrow. Write what you would repeat even if this company never writes back. Do that again on the next form. Grieve the no as a no, not as a verdict on having tried.

The usual reading, and the text
A common reading treats the slogan as emotional instructions: stop hoping, stop minding, become someone who is fine either way. Bhagavad gita quotes on karma get used to shut a person up after a loss.
Gita says about karma, in this verse, that the claim and the fruit are different desks. Krishna quotes on karma in hindi are the same split: do the work, do not install yourself as the owner of the result, and do not answer a missed result by abandoning action. The disappointment is not cancelled. The charge against the worker is. Karm karo fal ki chinta mat karo in sanskrit is the full shloka, including the warning against inaction, not the six word comfort people forward.

What the other verses add
Contact without the stain
The person who works without clinging is untouched by the stain, as a lotus leaf is untouched by water.
The lotus keeps you from hearing 2.47 as an order to leave the work. You remain in the action. What does not soak in is the cling that makes the fruit a stain on your name. After a rejection, the stain you feel is often this cling, not the fact that you prepared. The leaf is still in the water. It is not dripping with the result.
Do not answer a miss by quitting
sahajaṃ karma kaunteya sadoṣam api na tyajet| sarvārambhā hi doṣeṇa dhūmenāgnir ivāvṛtāḥ||18.48||
Do not drop the work that is yours even when it has defects. Every beginning is covered by some fault, as fire is covered by smoke.
When the fruit fails, the mind looks for a defect in the action and then uses that defect as a reason to stop. This verse blocks the move. Every real undertaking has smoke on it. A missed result does not prove you should have stood aside. It proves the fruit was never a clean receipt. The next action can still be yours, smoke and all.
What this page will not do
- It will not tell you the missed result was secretly a success.
- It will not shame you for wanting the fruit in the first place.
- It will not call a half effort next time a sign of wisdom.
- It will not rewrite a careful month as naivety because the scoreboard stalled.
- It will not name the day the fruit is supposed to arrive.

Questions
Bhagavad gita chapter 2 verse 47 meaning+
Your claim is on the action, not on the fruit. Do not let the fruit become the motive that owns the work, and do not answer a missed fruit by falling in love with doing nothing. The disappointment can stay. The prosecution of the worker does not follow from it. That is the bhagavad gita chapter 2 verse 47 meaning in the hour after a real miss, not a mood of indifference.
What is karma yoga?+
On this page it is the division of labour in Bhagavad Gita 2.47, not a personality. What is karma yoga in bhagavad gita, read here, is work done without installing yourself as the owner of the result. It is not a promise that the result will match the care. It is a refusal to call the care stupid when the result does not.
What does the full shloka include that the slogan drops?+
The slogan keeps the first claim: act, and do not live in anxiety about the fruit. Karm karo fal ki chinta mat karo shlok, in full, adds that you must not cling to inaction either. The second sentence is the one you need when you are about to do the next thing with half a heart. The full verse is that whole teaching, not the six words on the poster.
Gita says about karma+
Gita says about karma, in this cluster of lines, that action is your jurisdiction and the fruit is not. Bhagavad gita quotes on karma that tell you not to mind at all have shaved the verse into a muzzle. You are allowed to mind. You are not allowed to misfile the miss as proof that careful work was naive, or to punish the next action for the fruit you did not control.
Krishna quotes on karma in hindi+
The Hindi of Bhagavad Gita 2.47 says your right is only to the work, never to the fruits, so do not become the motive of the fruit and do not get tied to not working. Krishna quotes on karma in hindi that stop at the first clause leave out the warning you most need after a loss: do not thin the next effort just to make the fruit unable to hurt you.
