Ask Vedanta · Decision Making

Every page on this site is a version of this question. Here it is directly.

You want someone clear and final to tell you what to do. The text’s last move is the opposite: think it through, then the choice stays yours. Guidance, not prediction, with a Sanskrit shloka for your situation. Free, no birth details.

You did not come for another framework. You came for an answer

The bhagavad gita on decision making is the thesis underneath career pages, family duty pages, and overthinking pages: you want the voice in the text to finish the sentence for you. Stay or leave. Speak or swallow it. Choose the path that will not haunt you. You have already gathered advice until advice sounds like noise. What you are really asking is for the noise to stop in the form of a verdict that belongs to someone wiser than you.

That wish is understandable. It is also the wish Krishna refuses at the end of the long teaching. He has spoken for chapters. Then he says reflect on this fully, and do as you wish. The refusal is not him being vague. It is him declining the role you are trying to hire him for: substitute decision maker.

If you feel anger at that refusal, notice it. Anger often means you wanted relief from ownership. Ownership is exactly what he returns. The next pages you need may be about the loop of thinking, the pull of family duty, or the shape of work that is yours, but those pages still will not swipe the choice out of your hands. This page exists so the pattern is visible: every specialised question on the site still ends in authorship. The thesis is not hidden in the footnotes. It is the closing move of the teaching itself. Come here when you catch yourself hiring a voice, any voice, to finish the sentence you are afraid to finish.

Vimrishya

Having thought it through, then the choice stays yours. Not a new emotion cluster; the verse’s own pivot.

Vimrishya shows up as the moment after information when you still try to outsource the last inch. You ask one more person. You open one more thread. You want a teacher, a chart, a friend to say “do this” so that if it hurts later the pain has another author. You may even say you are willing to obey whatever is chosen for you, which sounds humble and is often a way to avoid being the one who can be blamed. The text’s pivot is to stop before that handoff and leave the authorship with you. Reflection is required. Replacement is refused.

Just tell me what to do.

The verse for this

iti te jñānam ākhyātaṃ guhyād guhyataraṃ mayā| vimṛśyaitad aśeṣeṇa yathecchasi tathā kuru||18.63||

Bhagavad Gita 18.63

I have told you this knowledge, more secret than secret. Reflect on it fully; then do as you wish.

This is the end of the argument, not a soft exit. Krishna has not been short of instruction. He still will not become Arjuna’s remote control. Vimrishya, having reflected completely, then yathecchasi tatha kuru: as you wish, so act. Bhagavad gita quotes on decision making that skip this line turn the Gita into a vending machine for verdicts. The machine is imaginary. What you get instead is a trained capacity to see, and an unbroken responsibility to choose. If that feels like abandonment, read it again as respect. He trusts you with the ending. Respect is heavier than a borrowed verdict because later you cannot say someone else authored your life. That heaviness is not a flaw in the text. It is the text refusing to infantilise you after educating you. The teaching ends by handing the choice back to you. That is the answer. If you came here from another page, a loop of checking, a family pull, a job that may not be yours, the same ending applies. Reflection can be shared. The last inch cannot be subcontracted. Write the options you already see, name the fear wearing the mask of thoroughness, and then choose with the defects still visible. Asking again for a verdict is a way of keeping the file open so later pain has another author. Close that file yourself.

What an answer looks like

An example, not a real conversation.

“I have two job offers. I want you to tell me which one is right. I will do whatever you say.”

That sentence is honest and it is the exact handoff 18.63 refuses. I can help you reflect: pay, hours, the work that is actually yours, the fear that is wearing the mask of prudence. I cannot author the choice so that later the pain has my name on it.

Vimrishya means you still owe yourself a full look, not another month of delay dressed as seriousness. Write the trade each offer truly demands. Notice which fear is loudest. Notice which duty is actually yours rather than borrowed from someone else’s résumé.

Secondary lines matter here. Your own imperfect duty can beat another’s polished path. You have a claim on action, not on a controlled fruit. Neither line picks the offer for you. Both change what you are allowed to stop demanding from the decision.

The next honest step is to stop hunting a substitute decider. Reflect once on paper today. Then choose, with the defect still visible, as the career and overthinking pages also require in their own keys. If you open the chat, bring the handoff sentence itself, “just tell me what to do”, and watch how hard it is to let reflection end in your own act.

Bring your own version of this

The usual reading, and the text

A sacred text that advises at length should finally remove the burden of choice, the way a commander removes it from a soldier.

Bhagavad Gita 18.63 does the opposite. After the teaching, Krishna orders full reflection and returns the act to your wish. Bhagavad gita on choices, read honestly, ends in authorship, not in a borrowed verdict. A long education that ends by removing your agency would be training for obedience, not for discernment. The text trains discernment and then requires you to use it.

What the other verses add

Which work is yours

śreyān svadharmo viguṇaḥ paradharmāt svanuṣṭhitāt| svadharme nidhanaṃ śreyaḥ paradharmo bhayāvahaḥ||3.35||

Bhagavad Gita 3.35

Better one’s own duty, even imperfect, than another’s duty done well. Better death in one’s own duty; another’s duty brings danger.

When the decision is career shaped, this line does not pick the employer. It asks which duty is yours versus which looks impressive because someone else wears it well. Use it to interrogate envy and borrowed standards, then return to 18.63 for the authorship you still cannot outsource. Family shaped decisions need the same interrogation: whose duty is speaking, and whose fear is wearing duty’s clothes.

What you cannot purchase with the choice

karmaṇyevādhikāras te mā phaleṣu kadācana| mā karmaphalahetur bhūr mā te saṅgo 'stvakarmaṇi||2.47||

Bhagavad Gita 2.47

You have a claim on action alone, never on its fruits. Do not make the fruit your motive; do not cling to inaction either.

Many stalled decisions are stalled because you want the choice to buy a controlled outcome. This verse removes that purchase. It does not tell you which door to open. It tells you that fruit control was never for sale, and that freezing counts as a clinging of its own. Once the fantasy of a controlled fruit is named, reflection can finish. Until then, every option looks incomplete because it cannot guarantee the result you are secretly shopping for.

What this page will not do

  • It will not become the remote control you came to hire.
  • It will not remove ownership so that later pain has another author.
  • It will not replace reflection with a mystical coin toss.
  • It will not pretend a long teaching cancels the final handoff to you.
  • It will not rank your options while you refuse to look at them.

Questions

What does bhagavad gita say about decision making?+

Bhagavad Gita 18.63: reflect on the teaching fully, then do as you wish. After all the instruction, Krishna refuses to decide for Arjuna. That refusal is the teaching’s closing move. Guidance can train the eye. It cannot ethically steal the act so that later regret has somewhere else to live.

Why won’t this page just tell me what to do?+

Because imitating the text means imitating the handoff. Guidance can sharpen reflection. It cannot ethically steal authorship so your future regret has somewhere else to live. If a page ranked your options while you refused to look at them, it would flatter your avoidance and call it service.

Bhagavad gita quotes on decision making+

They get clipped into commands that sound like someone else already chose. Without 18.63, quotes become a costume for avoidance. With it, quotes train seeing, then return the act to you. A quote that removes your agency after educating you is not fidelity to the closing verse; it is a rewrite.

Where should I go next on this site?+

If you are looping, open the overthinking page. If family is the pressure, open family duty. If the question is which work is yours, open career. This thesis page points out on purpose. Come back here when you notice yourself hunting a substitute decider again, the pattern is older than whichever topic is loud this week.
