Ask Vedanta · Family Duty
Arjuna's war was against his own family. Both sides of a duty can be real at once.
What your family wants and what you want are not lining up. Each side can produce a moral speech. Guidance, not prediction, with a Sanskrit shloka for your situation. Free, no birth details.

Both loyalties can be sincere and still not fit in one body
The bhagavad gita on family duty finds you in a conflict that does not look like a battlefield and feels like one. A parent wants a path. A sibling wants a sacrifice. You want a life that does not erase you. Each claim can be spoken in the language of care. That is why advice from outside sounds cheap. They are ranking the claims. You are trying to find which claim is yours to carry without pretending the other claim is fake.
Dharma moha is confusion of duty: when love for people you are bound to blinds the recognition of what must still be done, or when fear of their upset steals the seat that belongs to clear seeing. Arjuna drops his bow because the faces in front of him are family. The grief is not fake. Krishna does not call the grief fake. He refuses to let grief become the only compass.
Notice the bargain you keep offering. If I can make them agree, I will not have to choose. If I can find a quote that makes them wrong, I will not have to feel cruel. Agreement would be mercy. It is not always available. Recognition is quieter: what, in this tangle, is genuinely my work, and what am I carrying only because their disappointment is unbearable to imagine. If the conflict is mainly romantic pairing, that belongs on another page. This one stays with duty confusion inside family bonds, parents, siblings, shared work, shared name, where love and obligation tangle.

Dharma moha
Confusion of duty: love and fear tangle until you cannot tell which work is yours and which pain is theirs to feel.
Dharma moha shows up as endless explanation. You rehearse speeches that will make everyone proud and no one hurt. You delay a necessary conversation because the other face looks like Arjuna relatives on the field. You call the delay respect. Sometimes it is respect. Sometimes it is moha, a fog that treats their emotion as a veto on your clear obligation. The tell is how rarely you ask whose duty a feeling is. Their upset may be real and still not be yours to prevent at any cost. You may collect advisors who will crown your side or theirs. Crowns do not clear moha. Recognition does. Recognition is specific enough to act on without a unanimous dinner table.
What my family wants and what I want are not the same thing. Which one is actually my duty?

The verse for this
svadharmam api cāvekṣya na vikampitum arhasi| dharmyāddhi yuddhāc chreyo 'nyat kṣatriyasya na vidyate||2.31||
Looking at your own duty as well, you ought not to waver. For one in that role, nothing is better than a righteous battle.
Dharma sankat meaning, in the opening of the Gita, is not a puzzle with a cute answer. Arjuna sees teachers, cousins, friends. Bhagavad gita quotes on friendship in sanskrit get shared as warmth; the scene itself is warmer and more terrible because the friends are on the other side. Krishna points Arjuna back to svadharma, his own duty in the role he actually occupies, and says wavering is not owed once that is seen. He does not declare the other side unreal. He turns attention from who will be upset to what is genuinely theirs to do. Family pain remains real. It does not automatically rewrite the work. If you are waiting for a line that makes them wrong so you can move without feeling cruel, you are still asking the fog for a costume. Cruelty is abandoning care. Clarity can include care and still refuse to let their emotion veto what is yours. Write the split. Speak from the split. Let their grief be real without making it the author of your duty. Both sides are real. Only one of them is yours.

What an answer looks like
An example, not a real conversation.
“My parents want me to stay in the family business. I want to train for a different craft. They say duty. I feel selfish. Who is right?”
Both speeches can be sincere. Their fear of losing the work and your pull toward a craft you can stand behind are not automatically fake. Ranking them by volume will not settle the fog.
Svadharma is not whatever hurts less to say at the dinner table. It is the work that belongs to your capacity and situation even when it disappoints someone you love. It may turn out to be staying. It may turn out to be leaving. The verse does not pick for you. It tells you not to waver once you have recognised which is yours.
Write what you are doing only to prevent their feeling, and what you would still owe the work if their feeling stayed loud. That split is the beginning of clear seeing.
The next honest step is one conversation that names your recognition without needing them to applaud it first. You are not required to make their grief disappear. You are required not to use their grief as the only compass.
If after recognition the work is staying, stay without self hatred. If it is leaving, leave without calling their love fake. Forms of care can continue. Fog does not have to.

The usual reading, and the text
A common reading says family duty means obeying the loudest elder, or that spiritual life means cutting ties. Bhagavad gita on relations gets pulled toward either submission or escape.
What bhagavad gita on duty emphasises in 2.31 is recognising your own duty and not wavering from it for the fog of grief alone. Love stays. The compass widens beyond who will cry. You may still serve family in forms that are truly yours. You stop confusing every request with your svadharma. Stay with the recognition of your work. Leave the fantasy that one dinner can make every face proud at once.

What the other verses add
Imperfect own work over perfect borrowed work
śreyān svadharmo viguṇaḥ paradharmāt svanuṣṭhitāt| svadharme nidhanaṃ śreyaḥ paradharmo bhayāvahaḥ||3.35||
Better is your own duty done imperfectly than another duty done well. Death in your own duty is better; another duty brings danger.
The path admired at home may be someone else duty performed beautifully. Your clumsier own work can still outrank it. That sentence is hard at a family table. It is also how the fog lifts. Bring this to the table when the admired path is someone else life performed well. Your imperfect own work can still be the honest one.
Reflect, then choose
iti te jñānam ākhyātaṃ guhyād guhyataraṃ mayā| vimṛśyaitad aśeṣeṇa yathecchasi tathā kuru||18.63||
I have taught you this deeper knowledge. Reflect on it fully, then do as you choose.
Even Krishna leaves the last step to Arjuna. A verse is not a parent replacement. Reflect on what is yours, then act. The teaching refuses both abdication and ventriloquism. Use it when you want the text to replace your choice. It will not. Reflect, then act as you choose.
What this page will not do
- It will not crown the loudest relative as the voice of dharma.
- It will not call every boundary a betrayal of family love.
- It will not pretend their grief is fake so you can move lightly.
- It will not hand you a script that makes everyone proud at once.
- It will not date the month their disappointment expires.

Questions
What is dharma sankat?+
It is the bind Arjuna faces when duty and love for his people pull against each other. The grief is treated as real. The teaching still turns him toward recognising his own duty rather than letting grief be the only compass.
Bhagavad gita on duty+
Not automatically. Bhagavad gita on duty in 2.31 and 3.35 asks which work is yours, even imperfectly, rather than which request is loudest. Sometimes yours is care at home. Sometimes yours is a path that disappoints. Recognition decides, not volume.
How do I stop feeling selfish?+
Separate preventing their emotion from doing your work. Their disappointment can be real without being a veto. Selfishness is abandoning what is yours to avoid discomfort. Clarity can still include love and practical support in forms that are truly yours. That separation keeps love from becoming a blank cheque against your svadharma.
What if both options hurt someone?+
Then you are in the field the text knows. Both sides real. One of them yours. Reflect, then choose, 18.63 leaves the last step with you. A quote will not remove the hurt. It can remove the fog about authorship of the duty.
What does bhagavad gita say about family?+
No. Bhagavad gita on relations in this frame is not a glamour of escape. It is clear seeing inside bonds. You may renegotiate forms of service. You are not asked to call love a mistake in order to move.
