Ask Vedanta · Love

The Gita says little about whether they will stay, and a great deal about how to love without clutching.

You love them. The days still take work. Guidance, not prediction, with a Sanskrit shloka for your situation. Free, no birth details.

You wanted the feeling to do the labour by itself

The bhagavad gita on love and marriage finds you in the ordinary grind of closeness: the tone after a long day, the silence that lasts a little too long, the urge to check whether they still mean it. You are not asking for a wedding speech. You are asking why love that is real still requires so much deliberate behaviour. The culture around you answers with either fate or chemistry. Neither explains the evening when affection is present and patience is not.

Raga, attachment, in a relationship is the clutch under the care. Care wants contact. The clutch wants a shape of contact that confirms you, a reply speed, a public signal, a promise worded exactly your way. When the shape slips, you do not only feel disappointment. You feel unreal, as if the love itself were counterfeit. That is the pattern talking. The person may still be there. The confirmation contract was what broke.

Notice what you do when the feeling dips. You test. You withdraw to punish. You demand a conversation that is really a referendum. Or you perform sweetness while privately tallying debts. None of that is the portrait the twelfth chapter offers of a person fit for devotion and for human closeness. That portrait is almost boring: no hatred, friendliness, compassion, without possessiveness, without the I maker, even in pleasure and pain, forgiving. Conduct. Not a mood. If you need a ruling about caste or whose parents are correct, you are asking this page for something it refuses. It will stay with how you love. It will not issue a verdict on the match.

राग

Raga

Attachment that turns love into a contract: I am alright only if they confirm me in this exact shape.

Raga shows up as monitoring dressed as care. You read delays as verdicts. You need the anniversary language to match the private script. You call jealousy protectiveness. You call scorekeeping honesty. The body stays tense in ordinary evenings because ordinary evenings do not pay the contract. The tell is how little interest you have in your own conduct when theirs is under audit. Love becomes a courtroom. Courtrooms do not feel like home, which is why you keep asking whether love is supposed to be this much work. You may also confuse intensity with proof. Intensity without friendliness is weather with a loud soundtrack. The list is quieter and more demanding than intensity. It asks what you do when the soundtrack dips.

I love them. So why does it take this much work?

The verse for this

adveṣṭā sarvabhūtānāṃ maitraḥ karuṇa eva ca| nirmamo nirahaṅkāraḥ samaduḥkhasukhaḥ kṣamī||12.13||

Bhagavad Gita 12.13

Without hatred toward any being, friendly and compassionate, without possessiveness, without the I maker, even toward pleasure and pain, forgiving.

What does bhagavad gita say about love, when people actually open the chapter on devotion, is startlingly unromantic. The person dear to Krishna is described as conduct you can practise on a Tuesday. No hatred. Friend. Compassion. Without mama, the mine that turns a partner into property. Without ahamkara, the I maker that needs their mood to certify you. Even minded in pleasure and pain. Forgiving. Bhagavad gita on relationships that stay with this list stop asking the feeling to do all the labour. The feeling will dip. The list is what you do while it dips. Krishna quotes on love that only celebrate intensity have skipped the verse. Intensity without this conduct is just weather. If you are tallying debts while smiling, you are already in the courtroom. Leave the courtroom for one evening: name one need cleanly, practise one item on the list, and let one ordinary silence remain ordinary. Partnership timing is a separate question from whether love requires this conduct. Conduct is available on a Tuesday. Forecasts are not what this verse is for. Love is not only a feeling you have. It is how you behave when the feeling dips.

What an answer looks like

An example, not a real conversation.

“I love my partner but I get mean when they are distant for a day. Then I panic that we are broken. Is that normal or am I failing at this?”

The love can be real and the clutch can still be running. Distance for a day breaks the confirmation contract, and meanness is how the clutch tries to force a signal. Panic is the story that without the signal the bond is counterfeit.

Look at 12.13 as a checklist for your side of the evening, not as a scorecard for their personality. Without hatred, can you drop the punishing tone. Without possessiveness, can their quiet hour remain theirs. Forgiving, can one distant day stay one day.

Say one clean sentence about needing contact without turning it into a referendum on the relationship. Then practise one item on the list before you demand a speech from them.

The next honest step is conduct during the dip: friendliness that is not fake sugar, and a pause on the audit. If something larger is wrong, it will still be there tomorrow without tonight becoming a trial.

If you want timing language for a partnership, that is a different tool. Here the work is how you behave in the dip without clutching for proof.

The usual reading, and the text

A common reading wants the Gita to bless a match, ban a match, or guarantee who stays. What gita says about marriage gets pulled toward rulings and forecasts.

What the text emphasises here is how to be with another person without hatred, possessiveness, and the I maker. Bhagavad gita on love, in this verse, is a portrait of conduct. It does not issue a verdict on whose hand you should take. It tells you what love looks like when the feeling is not doing all the talking. Keep looking for conduct you can practise tonight. Leave match rulings to places that claim them. This page will not.

What the other verses add

In contact without the stain

Bhagavad Gita 5.10

Whoever acts without personal clinging, offering the work up, is no more stained than a lotus leaf is soaked by water.

Closeness is water. The clutch is what soaks you. You can stay in the relationship fully and still drop the demand that every ripple prove you. The leaf is the picture for partnership as much as for work. If every delayed reply soaks you, the clutch is active. Stay in the bond if that is your choice, and drop the demand that the ripple certify your worth.

The dip is weather

mātrāsparśāstu kaunteya śītoṣṇasukhaduḥkhadāḥ| āgamāpāyino 'nityās tāṃs titikṣasva bhārata||2.14||

Bhagavad Gita 2.14

Contacts with the senses bring cold and heat, pleasure and pain. They come and go; endure them.

A cool evening in a warm bond is contact changing temperature. Enduring it is not indifference. It is refusing to treat weather as a final judgment on the house. Use this when a cool evening becomes a story about the whole house being finished. Temperature changed. The house may still be standing.

What this page will not do

  • It will not tell you whether they are going to stay or leave.
  • It will not rule on caste, community, or whose parents are right.
  • It will not treat a dip in feeling as proof the love was fake.
  • It will not excuse cruelty as passion or jealousy as devotion.
  • It will not time the season when partnership becomes easy.

Questions

What does bhagavad gita say about love?+

In the portrait of 12.13, love looks like conduct: without hatred, friendly, compassionate, without possessiveness, without the I maker, even in pleasure and pain, forgiving. It is not mainly a forecast about who stays.

What does gita say about marriage?+

This teaching does not issue match rulings. It describes how to be with another person without clutching and pride. What gita says about marriage in popular searches often wants a verdict. The verse wants a practice.

Why does real love still feel like work?+

Because feeling dips, and conduct has to carry the evening. Attachment adds a confirmation contract on top of care. When the contract breaks, the work feels like proof that love failed. Often it is the contract failing, not the care. Naming that split reduces the panic that work means the love was counterfeit.

What does bhagavad gita say about love marriage?+

It does not issue a ruling on whom to marry. It describes how to stay close without clutching: without hatred, without possessiveness, without pride. Love marriage in the search bar still lands on that conduct, not on a verdict about the match.

What if the feeling is gone some days?+

Bhagavad Gita 2.14 treats changing contacts as coming and going. Endure the temperature shift without turning it into a final judgment. Then return to the conduct list. Feeling can return. Conduct is what you can choose tonight.
