Ask Vedanta · Depression

Arjuna's first words are a description of a body that has stopped working. The Gita starts there.

If you cannot make yourself begin, that is not a character flaw to prosecute alone. For professional crisis support in India, Tele MANAS is available at 14416. Guidance, not prediction, with a Sanskrit shloka for your situation. Free, no birth details.

You cannot start, and you are furious at yourself for that

The bhagavad gita on depression is often searched as if the text owed you a mood upgrade. What it actually opens with is closer to your morning: a person who can name the work and still cannot get the limbs to agree. Arjuna sits down in the chariot because the body has refused. That refusal is not framed as laziness in the opening. It is named as collapse. If your day looks like staring at the same task until fury at yourself becomes the only motion left, you are not inventing a private defect. You are describing a known place in the text.

The fury is important to separate from the stuckness. Stuckness is the limbs not answering. Fury is the second voice that prosecutes the first: you should be able to; other people do; you are wasting the day again. That second voice feels like discipline. It is often the enemy half of the verse at work, the self turning on the self until even a small start feels like proof of failure before it happens.

Nothing here asks you to rebrand the day as growth. Nothing here replaces a clinician, a friend who can sit with you, or a crisis line when the dark is sharp. The text has one narrow offer for this shape of morning: do not add degradation to the weight you are already carrying, and lift what you can lift, which may be one ordinary act, not a recovery narrative. If you are reading this at two in the morning, there is no product waiting underneath the verse and no blame dressed as insight. The page is allowed to be small because your capacity today may be small.

Atma

The self as it can befriend you or turn against you, the verse’s own distinction, not a new label for your illness.

Atma as enemy shows up when you cannot start the simplest thing and then spend the next hour punishing yourself for the delay. The inbox stays closed. The shower feels like a cliff. You rehearse how weak that sounds, which makes the cliff taller. You compare your morning to a version of yourself from a lighter month and treat the gap as evidence. Atma as friend is smaller than motivation posters: it is refusing one more round of that prosecution, and choosing one lift that does not require you to feel repaired first. Friend is not a pep rally. Friend is the decision to stop sharpening the knife you are already under.

I cannot make myself do anything, and I am furious with myself for it.

The verse for this

uddhared ātmanā''tmānaṃ nātmānam avasādayet| ātmaiva hyātmano bandhur ātmaiva ripur ātmanaḥ||6.5||

Bhagavad Gita 6.5

Lift the self by the self; do not degrade the self. The self alone is the friend of the self, and the self alone is the enemy of the self.

People arrive wanting a verse that will hoist them into a better mood. Bhagavad Gita 6.5 has two halves, and both matter. The first, lift yourself, lands as pressure if you already cannot begin: another demand on a body that is not answering. The second, do not degrade yourself, is the half that usually goes unread. On a bad day the prosecution is already loud. Choosing not to add to it is not passivity. It is the friend move the verse names. The self can be friend or enemy; the text does not pretend those are the same voice. Your fury at your own stillness is often the enemy half speaking in the costume of standards. Notice how quickly standards arrive when the limbs will not. Notice how the standards never offer a smaller task, only a harsher verdict. The lift, when it comes, can be embarrassingly small: water, a message to one person, standing up once, opening a window. It does not have to feel like healing. It has to interrupt degradation. If someone told you the Gita replaces treatment, they sold you a different book. If someone called this a karmic test or a spiritual failing, they added the enemy voice in religious clothing. This page refuses both. The self can be its own friend. Today that might be the whole of it.

What an answer looks like

An example, not a real conversation. Not a substitute for professional care.

“I have sat with the same open document for three hours. I hate myself for it. Everyone else seems able to work. What is wrong with me?”

The document is the scene. The fury is the second problem. You are treating the stuckness as proof of a ruined character, which makes the next keystroke cost more than it did three hours ago. That cost is the enemy half of the verse, not evidence that you are uniquely broken.

Lift yourself does not mean finish the document before you deserve rest. It means one concrete lift that does not require a changed mood: close the tab of self prosecution for ten minutes, drink water, send one honest line to someone who already knows your days get like this. If the dark is sharp or you are unsafe, that line can be to professional help, not to a philosophy page.

Do not ask this text to replace treatment. Do not read the stuckness as a spiritual failing or a karmic exam. The verse is interested in whether you keep attacking the person who is already down.

The next honest step is the second half first: stop narrating your stillness as contempt. Then one lift, sized to the day you actually have. If even that is too much, the friend move can be only this: do not spend the next hour explaining to yourself why you deserve the contempt. That interruption counts.

Bring your own version of this

The usual reading, and the text

A common reading treats low mood as a spiritual failure, a test you are flunking, or a problem a single inspiring line should erase so you can perform again.

The verse names a split inside the same person: friend and enemy. Lift is real; so is the ban on degradation. The text does not diagnose you, replace care, or sell a recovery timeline. It refuses the extra cruelty you add when you cannot start. Read that way, the page is closer to harm reduction for the inner voice than to a motivational poster. You keep the clinician. You keep the medicine if you have it. You keep the friend who can sit without fixing. You drop only the speech that turns stillness into proof you are uniquely ruined.

What the other verses add

The weather of the day

mātrāsparśāstu kaunteya śītoṣṇasukhaduḥkhadāḥ| āgamāpāyino 'nityās tāṃs titikṣasva bhārata||2.14||

Bhagavad Gita 2.14

Contacts of the senses bring cold and heat, pleasure and pain. They come and go; they are not permanent. Endure them.

On a heavy day this line is not cheerfulness. It is a description of sensation that arrives and leaves without needing you to moralise it. Enduring is not pretending you feel light. It is refusing to add a permanent verdict to a state that the text already calls impermanent in its coming and going. Heavy mornings still hurt. The verse’s interest is whether you turn the weather into a character sentence that follows you into the afternoon as law.

Hard does not mean impossible

śrī bhagavān uvāca asaṃśayaṃ mahābāho mano durnigrahaṃ calaṃ| abhyāsena tu kaunteya vairāgyeṇa ca gṛhyate||6.35||

Bhagavad Gita 6.35

The mind is restless and hard to restrain; still, by practice and by dispassion, it can be held.

Krishna does not deny the difficulty. He agrees the mind is hard to hold, then points to practice and dispassion rather than to self hatred. If your mind will not settle today, that matches the first clause. The second clause is training over time, not a sentence you failed before breakfast. Practice can look like returning once to the breath, or once to a single unfinished task, without a speech about becoming a new person by Monday.

What this page will not do

  • It will not call your inability to start a spiritual failing.
  • It will not replace a clinician, a crisis line, or medicine you need.
  • It will not sell you a recovery date or a mood guarantee.
  • It will not treat the fury at yourself as proof you are uniquely broken.
  • It will not ask you to rebrand a heavy day as a hidden blessing.

Questions

What does krishna say about depression?+

Bhagavad Gita 6.5 splits the problem. Lift yourself, and do not degrade yourself. The second half matters on days when the first feels impossible. The self can befriend you or prosecute you. Interrupting the prosecution is part of the teaching, not a side note. If the only move available is refusing one more insult to yourself, that move still belongs to the verse.

Is depression a spiritual failing in this reading?+

No. The page refuses that frame. Stuckness is named; cruelty toward yourself is named. Neither is sold as a karmic test. If you need clinical care, take it. This text sits beside care, not above it. A heavy morning is not evidence that you failed a hidden exam the universe set for your character.

Bhagavad gita quotes on depression+

They often promise a mood change or treat low energy as moral weakness. Useful lines stay closer to 6.5: stop degrading the person who cannot start, then attempt one lift sized to the day. Quotes that shame you are the enemy half wearing Sanskrit. If a quote leaves you more prosecuted than before, it is not helping, no matter how beautiful the calligraphy.

What about anxiety that comes with the stuckness?+

Bhagavad gita quotes on anxiety sometimes float as calm slogans. Here the useful companion is 6.35: the mind is hard to restrain, Krishna agrees, and practice is slow. Anxiety plus self fury is still two problems. Soften the fury first when you can. The restless mind is already named as difficult; adding contempt does not make the restraint easier.
